How to grow Northern Lights

beginner

Northern Lights is a legendary Afghani-rooted indica-dominant cultivar prized in the grow room for its compact, manageable structure and reliable, uniform flowering behaviour. It tends to produce dense, resinous buds on a sturdy, short-to-medium frame that suits most indoor setups.

Environment

Thrives in a moderately warm, stable environment — temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s°F (around 22–26°C) during lights-on are generally well-suited, with a modest lights-off drop. Humidity should be kept moderate during veg (45–60% RH) and reduced meaningfully in late flower (40–50% RH) to protect its dense bud structure. Good horizontal airflow across the canopy is important; this strain's tight internodal spacing and thick foliage can create stagnant pockets. VPD management in the 0.8–1.2 kPa range during flower is a sensible target, though individual phenos vary.

Training & canopy

Well-suited to low-stress training (LST) and SCROG due to its naturally bushy, low-profile structure. Topping early in veg works reliably — it tends to respond with vigorous lateral branching that fills a net or trellis efficiently. Its limited stretch means a SCROG screen can be placed relatively close to the canopy. High-stress techniques like manifolding are manageable but not necessary; its natural symmetry often does much of the work.

Flowering

Expect a moderate stretch at the flip to 12/12 — typically 1.3–1.6× the pre-flower height, though some phenos stay very compact. Flowering tends to wrap up on the shorter end for an indica, often in the 7–9 week range from flip, though exact timing should always be confirmed by trichome development rather than calendar. The bud-building phase accelerates noticeably around weeks 4–5, with calyxes stacking into dense, chunky formations. Resin production typically becomes visible and pronounced in the final 2–3 weeks. A thorough flush window is worth planning for.

Difficulty

A forgiving, robust indica-dominant classic that tolerates minor feeding and environmental fluctuations well — widely considered one of the best entry points for new indoor growers.

Watch for

  • · Bud rot / botrytis risk: Dense, tightly-packed colas trap moisture — late-flower humidity control and strong airflow are non-negotiable.
  • · Overfeeding sensitivity: Afghan-lineage plants tend to be heavy feeders during bud development but can show nutrient burn and tip curl if pushed too hard early; ramp up gradually.
  • · Foliage density: Thick leaf coverage with tight internodal spacing can block light penetration and airflow — proactive defoliation and lollipopping in early flower is recommended.
  • · Colour masking: Heavy resin and dense foliage can obscure early signs of deficiency or pest pressure; inspect bud sites and lower canopy closely and regularly.
